Passed Out

Busy weekend

What a fun weekend! On Friday night, we just picked up pizza and stayed in to watch basketball. We had swim class on Saturday morning and Will did much better. He actually "swam" a little and didn't just grip mom. We got some smiles, he did a great job practicing climbing out of the pool, and he loved splashing. Then we went to Gymboree for open gym so Will could run around and then grabbed lunch before heading home. After Will's nap, we played outside or a while before meeting Aunt Katie for dinner. We had just finished up with dinner when Billy got into town so we all went back to Katie's apartment to hang out for a bit. On Sunday, Will had a birthday party to go to. He had a lot of fun playing with the other kids, playing with all the new-to-him toys, and decorating train cookies. Then he napped during the Michigan game (boo!) but had some popcorn as a treat when he woke up.

He took great naps on both Saturday and Sunday and slept well both nights. He still likes to turn on his overhead light. We're not sure why...

Thanks for my new jacket, Grann!

We've had some beautiul weather the past couple days. Yesterday it was up in the 60s so Will got to try out his new coat that Grann got him. He really likes his new jacket. Phil was working from home today, and after Grandma put him in it, he had to run to show daddy. Phil also has a bright orange coat and I think Will made the connection.

He spent a good portion of the day outside - especially since he has figured out how to unlock and open both our sliding screen door and glass patio doors. I had to make a run to Lowe's to get some additional locking mechanisms that he can't reach. We have a make shift set up now, but I think if he gets any stronger he'll be able to either break the door or rip off the lock. Next project: adding a bolt lock to our front door. I'm pretty sure if he put his mind to it, he could use his stool of mischief to get that door open.

You would think all this activity would lead to great naps - but he hasn't been napping much in the afternoon. All that freedom leads to play! But then he is exhausted at night and falls asleep without any trouble. Last night, we went to peek at him right before we went to bed. He had gotten up to play and then fell asleep resting his head and upper body on the bed - with his feet on the ground. So cute. So we slid him up into the bed and he went back to bed.

This was taken about 30 seconds before a handul of dirt/mud found its way into Will's mouth.

Aftermath

Now that Will can wander his room during nap time, we never know what to expect when we open the door once he's up! This scene is actually relatively tame - the closet hasn't been taken apart.

Big(ger) Boy Bed

Here's a big boy bed update: On Saturday, we met our friends at Gymco. The kids got to play for a while and afterwards, we were able to pick up their toddler bed conversion kit (we have the same crib). After lunch, we put the crib together and Will seemed to like it. Although he can still get out of the bed easily, he can't roll out in his sleep. At nap time, we talked up his "big boy bed." He didn't cry at all. He played for a couple minutes before hoping into bed and taking an almost 3 hour nap. At bedtime it was the same routine. He played for a bit and then slept until morning. We did find that he would turn on the light on his nightstand so we started unplugging that at night. Sunday afternoon, he moved his toys over to turn on the overhead light as well. He didn't do that last night so we'll see if that continues.

Escape Artist

Several months ago, Will climbed out of his crib for the first time. For the next week, we were quick to get him up in the morning and after naps and he seemed to forget he had the skill. Last December, he learned to climb out of his pack and play - and did it multiple times. But he was still content in his crib. That is, until a couple days ago. Grandma and Grandpa were watching him while we had a U of M board meeting. When we got home, they told us the news: Will climbed out of his crib after his nap, opened his door, and walked out. That night, he went to bed without any trouble but did get himself out in the morning. Then he escaped twice during his afternoon nap, and again in the morning. We have a toddler bed conversion kit on order (and are probably going to borrow one from our friends with the same crib until ours comes in. Last night, he demonstrated how he gets out, which is actually pretty safe. However, then he showed us that he could topple over back in (head first) which freaked us out a bit.

So we took off the front of his crib for a little experiment. All things considered, it actually went pretty well. At first, we left his door unlocked. He would get into bed saying "nap time" but then would get up, open his door, and walk throughout the house looking for us (we were in our room with the lights out pretending we were sleeping, too). After a few times, we decided we would have to keep the door closed. So we put up a baby gate which also kept him from turning the door knob (a new door knob will be installed this weekend w/ a lock). He cried for a few minutes but then calmed down and just started to play. He played for probably 45 minutes before climbing into bed and falling asleep. At that time, his nightstand light was on so we snuck in and turned it off. He slept soundly until about 3 am. Then he got up, played with his musical truck for 2 minutes, before going back to bed. As of 5:30 this morning, he's still asleep.

I think once we have the toddler bed set up he will feel more enclosed and may sleep better. We are also going to remove his nightstand light for a bit while he's getting used to it. We'll keep you posted...

Funny comments/phrases from Will

Uh-oh..... happened! (as in: I took a bunch of tissues out of the box and now they are on the floor. Uh-oh! Happened!) He says this whenever anything goes wrong.

Wash now! (when looking under our refrigerator)

Drink coffee. (He asked Aunt Mara this in the morning. She responded: Ask your mom. What were the first words out of his mouth when I got home at 5pm? Drink coffee.)

Wash hands. Wash the dishes. (He loves to play in the sink. He is quite clean)

No iffy cup. Big. (I would like to use a big boy cup please)

William do it. (self explanitory)

One bath a day!

Just a little bit. Not much. (always said together)

Not now. In a little bit. (like above, always said together)

Swimming Disaster

I was hoping to have some cute swimming photos to post today, however, swim class did not go well this weekend. Will has taken 2 sessions and loved them both. He swam with mom during the first session and with dad the majority of the second session. We decided Phil would swim with him this time around. When we got there, we found that we were the only family to sign up (or to remember class had started). The teacher was really nice and said we could still do a private lession. So Phil and Will got in the pool. And almos immediately, Will started crying for "mama in the pool." The crying lasted for the entire 25 minute class. So - no pictures.

But here are a few photos from my parents vacation to Sanibel Island. They went down there to visit some friends that have a condo there. The weather was great and they were able to spend a lot of time relaxing on the beach. My dad was also able to go out fishing with Carl and Brian. They saw a manate and a hammer head shark while out on the boat.
