Brotherly Love

We had a fun weekend with the boys. On Friday night, we originally planned to go to Ramona's Table for the first time as a family of 4. We extended the invite to some of our friends but then realized we'd have 6 adults and 5 kids. We figured the kids would have more fun if they could run around and play so everyone came over to our house for pizza instead.

On Saturday, we went to swim lessons and then Phil and Will went to Gymco for a while. After Will's nap, Phil and Will went to Manhattan Park to sled for a bit. Then we decided to make our trip to Ramona's Table for dinner. As we were packing up, Will decided he wanted to give Alex a kiss. Fortunately, the video camera was on the counter and we were able to capture it.

On Sunday, we decided to head downtown to let Will run around the skywalk. As we were packing up, Will put both of his loveys into Alex's car seat and said he wanted Alex to play with them for a while. He also has been helping out with bath time and tummy time. His interest in Alex is definitely growing and he seems to care for the little guy.

3 Weeks Old!

Alex turned 3 weeks old today. He is doing great!

We have been doing a lot of "tummy time." Unfortunately, he's too smart for us and has figured out how to flip over onto his back. He did it a couple times last week but today he did it 5 times in a row. It kind of defeats the purpose of tummy time but he's still building up his arm muscles.

Tummy Time

Alex appears to be taking after big brother already... it looks like he is going to be a thumb sucker as well.

Swimming

The video isn't great since I took it from the "viewing room" but you can see how much he loves jumping in off the side of the pool!

Sneak Peek - Newborn Photos

Here is a sneak peek look at our newborn/family photos that were taken when Alex was 5 days old. It is just a sample - we'll get more in a few weeks. Here is a link to a couple additional photos:

Swimming, Gymnastics, and Sledding

We had a fun filled weekend with the two boys. On Friday night, our friend Karen stopped by for a visit. She brought us dinner as well as a few items for Will and Alex. On Saturday morning, Will had swim class. Alex and I watched from the "viewing room" while Will and daddy were in the pool. Will did a great job - he loved jumping in (video coming soon). After class, we went to Babies R Us and Target to try to find Will a second pair of snow pants. We wanted to have a set for school and home. Unfortunately, all the stores were putting out swim suits so we couldn't find any. We stopped at Grandma and Grandpa's for a quick lunch before heading to Gymco for open gym. Will had fun jumping on the trampolines, walking on the balance beams, and climbing the various structures. Then we went home for nap time. Saturday evening, our friends brought us dinner and we were able to visit with them and their 4 month old little boy - a future friend for Alex! Sunday morning started with a pancake breakfast. Will and Phil went to Meijer and were able to find a pair of snow pants. After lunch, they went to Lakeside to do a little sledding. Then we started a fire and watched football. All in all, a great weekend!

Home Improvement Projects

We decided to tackle a few home improvement projects this fall in the hopes of having everything done by the time Alex arrived. We almost made it: the final kitchen appliance was installed 1 week after his arrival.

We replaced all our white kitchen appliances with stainless steel. We went with Kenmore Elite and are very happy with them. Cooking has become even more fun! We also replaced the knobs/pulls with brushed nickle to match.

In the basement, we converted a 16' x 7' storage room (concrete walls, exposed floor joists in the ceiling, brown peel and stick tiles on the floor) to a home office for Phil. They started construction on Halloween and it took about a month to complete. They could have started in early December and finished the project quicker, but we opted for an early start date and they just fit us in around other jobs. We are really happy with how it turned out. We still need to hang some more artwork but otherwise it is fully functional for Phil.

Since we were able to move the office furniture from the main section of our basement, we now have a large open space to use as a playroom. Kristen's parents helped us paint a "craft table" for the kiddos. We also added some storage and some magnet boards. All Will's toys from Christmas have found good homes. The other half of the basement is still used as a family/TV space.

Alexander Gene Maguran

Welcome Alexander Gene Maguran!

Born: Monday, January 2, 2012
Time: 2:10 pm
Weight: 6 lbs 15 oz
Lenght: 20"

Kristen went into labor on Sunday, January 1. She started to notice the contractions around 11pm, however, it was primarily "back labor" so the contractions probably started earlier and she just assumed it was typical back pain. At around 4 am the contractions were about 4-5 minutes apart so we called the doctor who said to make our way to the hospital within the next hour. So we called Grandma and Grandpa who came over to watch William.

When we got to the hospital, Kristen was at 4cm so we were admitted (unlike with with William). Kristen labored w/o an epidural for a while since the pain meds seemed to slow labor down with Will. Once she got it, they checked her and she was at 8cm. It didn't take long at that point to fully dialate and start pushing. Unfortunately, after 2 hours of pushing, the baby hadn't really moved. Her pelvic bone arched and blocked his way. So they started prepping for a c-section.

Alex was born at 2:10 pm. As it turned out, his umbilical cord was very short and he likely would have been a c-section regardless. Alex is doing great! He is eating well and barely lost any weight while in the hospital. We have his first check-up later this morning. Big Brother William seems to be adjusting well - at least so far.
