100th Day of School

The first graders celebrated the 100th day of school today by dressing like 100 year olds. Even the teachers dressed up! It's hard to see in the photos, but we sprayed Alex's hair with grey hair spray.  They all looked so cute!

Hockey in Ludington

We had a full weekend of hockey last week. On Friday, Phil and Will drove up to Ludington for Will's hockey tournament. The Broncos won their Friday night game 6-2. Alex and I stayed in Kalamazoo because he had practice Saturday morning and played a mini-game between two high school games in the afternoon. Will's team also won their second game so they clinched a spot in the semi finals on Sunday morning. So Alex and I drove up after his afternoon game. We missed Will's third game of the day (they lost, 2-1) but arrived in time for the team dinner. Unfortunately, they lost their game on Sunday morning but were able to enjoy the hotel pool before we had to check out. We stopped at the lakeshore to see the ice formations and had lunch in Pentwater before heading home.

Happy Valentine's Day

We had a fun Valentine's Day. The boys started the day with a LOVE themed breakfast and some gifts and treats. Alex had his class party in the morning. They played a few games, built a rocket ship using gummy hearts and toothpicks, had a few treats, and passed out Valentines. Will's party was in the afternoon. They had an ice cream sundae bar, passed out Valentines, and watched Happy Valentine's Day Charlie Brown. Before school, the MBE staff gathered by a community get well card for our principal and one of our teachers who are battling cancer. #MoorsbridgeStrong

Battle of the Books

Will and some of his friends participated in Battle of the Books on Monday night. The Battle of the Books is a book-based trivia competition for 4th and 5th grade. There is a set list of books to read (6 for us, some schools do more), study, and learn as a team. At the battle, they answer questions with details from the books or by identifying which book a quote or detail is from. Moorsbridge put together 14 teams of 6 students. Will's team has been meeting once a week since November to discuss the books. They didn't advance to the "Grand Battle" but did very well and are planning to compete again next year.

Snow Much Fun!

In the past two weeks, the boys have had 1.5 days of school. We had a snow day last Monday and a freezing rain day on Wednesday. Then they had a scheduled 1/2 day on Thursday and had Friday off due to the end of the marking period. Then the Polar Vortex rolled in. We had quite a bit of snow on Monday morning so school was closed. Then the temperatures dropped and they closed both Tuesday and Wednesday. Then on Wednesday afternoon, we learned that school was closed again on Thursday.  And then we got the "school's closed" call at 5am this morning.

The boys and I have been keeping busy. Will was supposed to have a "read-in" at school one of the days last week so we recreated the read-in at home. We got cozy in the family with a lot of books, turned on the fireplace, and had some snacks. That kept us buys a good chunk of the day. We also played multiple rounds of Hogwarts Battle. Each game takes around 1.5 hours to play and we played 3-4 times per day. We did manage to get outside on Monday (for quite a while in the afternoon) and Tuesday (just short little spurts). By Tuesday, the snow pile in the cul-de-sac was huge so they did a little sledding followed by hot chocolate. On Wednesday, I braved the cold to get a bowl full of snow for snow ice cream.  On Thursday, the boys made themselves U of M fleece blankets.  We also ventured out of the neighborhood so Will could participate in a Battle of the Books mock battle.  The actual battle is on February  11.  We are looking forward to warmer weather this weekend and getting back to school next week.
