Baseball - Royal Raptors

Last weekend, Will's baseball team played in their first tournament. There were four machine pitch teams in one pool and four AA teams (9-10 year olds). The Royal Raptors came in first in their pool and moved on the the semifinals. They lost to the second place AA team but played really well and were tied going into the last inning. On Sunday, the team got together for a pool party at the Applegate pool. They had their last game of the season last night. The weather (barely) cooperated and we were even able to get in a quick picnic style award ceremony before the bad weather hit. Now, it is on to the All Star team for William.

Last Batter!

After batting first in the last game, Alex was moved to the end of the batting order for the game tonight. That means he hits the "homerun ball" and gets to run all the bases. He had hits in all three innings.

Field Day Fun

Will's school had a field day this afternoon as a reward for good behavior. There were six stations the classes rotated through with fun activities like a three legged race, pizza box race, sack race, and water relays. At the end, they all got Popsicles!

Called Up

One of the West Portage Little League AA teams was short on players tonight (injuries, prior obligations, etc) and they asked if someone from the machine pitch division would be able to fill in. William was lucky and got to "play up" for the night. The AA teams play half their games using the machine and half with a player pitching. Tonight was a machine night so Will felt comfortable behind the plate. Some of the other rules are different, however. You can run multiple bases on a hit, can steal, etc. William did great! He got on base every inning and even hit a few doubles. They didn't bury him in the outfield - he played short stop, third base and first. He made some stops at short stop, had a great throw from third to first, and caught a great throw from the second baseman to get an out at first base. He had a lot of fun. The coach said he was welcome back for their game next Tuesday.

Golden Glove - Alex

Alex won the Golden Glove for his team tonight. He and Austin were actually co-winners. Alex got on base each time he was at bat. He also made some great stops at pitcher and made good throws to first base. He also got someone out at second base. Grandma and Grandpa were there to watch the game and got to see him win the glove. He was very excited!

AR Awards Ceremony

William had his Accelerated Reader Award Ceremony during lunch today. Alex and I picked up Subway (Will's choice) and went up to school to have lunch with him and see him get his medal. He reached Gold Medal Status again this year. We are proud of our little bookworm.

Big Apple Bagels

William was sick the day his class had their walking field trip to Big Apple Bagels. Fortunately, two of the other second grade classes didn't go until this week and William was invited along. We left school at 1pm. The class was divided into three groups for the behind the scenes tour. They saw where they make their bagel sandwiches, how the bagel slicer works, the ovens, the cooler, and the machine that actually forms the bagels. Then, they all got to make their own frozen yogurt sundae. It was a beautiful day and a lot of fun!
